Many people have a so-called “pillow top" mattress, that is a conventional mattress with a sewn-in-place top layer, comprised of soft polyurethane foam and synthetic polyester fibre. The issue we have with those kinds of mattresses is the synthetic foam and fibre lose their resilience in a relatively short time, and the mattress takes on a much firmer feel.

Thirty years ago we found a manufacturer, Royal-Pedic, that made mattresses with removable mattress top pads, that proved to have several significant advantages over mass market  “pillow top” mattresses. The removeable top pad meant that it could be removed and placed on any other mattress should the need arise, for example, if the mattress felt like it had reached the end of its comfort life.

And because the top pad absorbed most of the wear and tear on a mattress, the life of the mattress could be vastly extended. And of critical importance to us, there were no off-gassing materials in their products, which can cause health problems, especially for people with chemical sensitivities.

Finally, the use of 100% cotton covers, moisture-mitigating lambs wool quilted to the cover, and breathable, natural rubber latex in place of closed-cell, heat retaining polyurethane foam gave us a product that was much more breathable, longer-lasting and devoid of petroleum-based chemicals.

We now carry the original top pad unchanged from thirty years ago, a well as two other ones from a different manufacturer, employing the same natural raw materials to offer optional levels of body conformity for all types of bodies.
